Dear Parents and Students,
I am so excited to meet with you for parent teacher conference. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss your child and to celebrate their growth. Over the last month we have been testing and monitoring the students progress. I am happy to say that every student in my class made amazing jumps in fluency and benchmarking. I know that I could not have done it without your help and I want to thank you for helping your students read nightly. Please continue to have your students practice their fluency passages. Our goal for the end of the year is 90 wpm, and read on a level M. Keep up the great work.
Reading: We are continuing to work on comprehension. Over the last month we have introduced non-fiction. The students have loved learning about trees and plants. Over the next month the students will be learning about compound words, homonyms and contractions. We will also begin teaching the students how to take a test. This is to prepare the students for the end of year core test.
Writing: We are still writing poetry and should have our books completed by the middle of February.
Math: This last month the students have learned how to subtract with regrouping. This is a difficult skill and we will continue to practice until each student has mastered the concept. We are currently learning about 3-D shapes with vertices, edges and faces. Our next unit will consist of telling time to the ¼ hour, sequence of events and elapse in time.
I want to thank you all for your help in the classroom. I am amazed this year at the amount of extra time I have to spend with my family, and plan. Thank you again for all your help.
Valentines Day: We will celebrate Valentines Day on Friday, February 12th: I will send home a list of students next week.
Please remember to help your student KEEP READING!!! It is very important that they leave second grade on grade level. The benefits to reading on grade level at the end of second grade will have a huge impact on their education to come. So please KEEP READING!! Never give up.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Woodland
